Creating a Folded Effect Letter

In this simple (senang tapi lama) tutorial i will show you on how to create a folding effect (lipat kertas) for a letter (typography). This tutorial is based on a tutorial made by Abduzeedo. This was made by him by using Photoshop, but i use GIMP. See more for details.

First, open a new file in GIMP and write down any letter you wish using big fonts.

 All the letters are in a separated layer. Now, lets start with the "L" by copying ctrl+c) it and paste (ctrl+V) on it. Named the pasted layer "pasted-L" and remember to change the font colour.

Now, select the part from the "L" that we want to fold it by using the path tools.

Copy it (ctrl+C), delete it and paste it again (ctrl+v). The new pasted "fold" will be on a new layer.

Use the flip tool to reverse the layer and rotate it to make it appear as it is folded.

 Do change the color saturation to make it look like the back of the letter. Then, add some shadow by using the gradient tools.

Add some drop shadow. Arrange it so it appear right beneath the fold part and decrease the opacity. Lastly, select the layer which contain the "pasted-L" and fill it with gradient color black from the bottom up, change the layer mode to overlay.

The first letter is done, now repeat the same process for the rest of the letter and delete the black letter later on. Here goes!
